Musicals!

Come, playwrights/musicians, you know who you are.
I admit I've never actually written a full-length musical or even play before, but I do really like the musical theater genre.
My Screnzy this year will be a musical called (as of yet) Toxicology, about two toxicologists who kill someone and then have to deal with it. I don't plan on trying to write the notes to the songs, at least not yet.
So, what about the rest of you? Plot? Anything about the songs that you know of? Are you going to write them down? Come over and talk about it.

RE: Musicals!

I thinking of writing either a non musical Doctor Who episode, an episode of The Monkees or a jukebox musical with an original plot but using songs by The Monkees. I know, I'm totally screwed.

RE: Musicals!

I'm writting a light/comic opera set aboard a spaceship where one of the people aboard (I'm thinking the captain's Yeoman) will fall in love with the Captain while the captain tries to woo a robot causing the first mate to have to take control of the ship and keep things from falling part even more so.

I'm not going to write the music but I will write all the songs out. Right now they are going to be paradies of Gilbert and Sullivan songs.

RE: Musicals!

I'm writing a musical about two teenagers that try to get away from murder. I got the idea from watching Sweeney Todd and combining the theme with my script idea from last year.

RE: Musicals!

Cool, my musical was sort of inspired by Sweeney Todd too.

RE: Musicals!

I am in love with musical theater and with Jane Austen. It only seemed natural to combine the two! So my roommate and I are working together to write Pride and Prejudice: the Musical. Neither of us can write music so we're just going to write songs probably sung to the tunes of other songs we already know. It'll be a great ridiculous combination of old Disney songs and showtunes at this rate. :) We do intend to have a few original songs as well, but they're not going to be any good, most likely.

It'll probably turn into more of a romantic comedy than the real story, and contain a lot of in-jokes.

RE: Musicals!

I wrote a musical last year and I'm going to do it again this year as well. In fact... I wrote the songs for this year's musical... well... most of them. There's at least one song I'm planning to use that I didn't write.

In any case, this year's musical is tentatively named Simple Gifts. It's a Christmas (well... technically, Epiphany) musical about a boy struggling to figure out what gift to give the Christ child at the upcoming church service. At the same time, he's struggling with the fear that his father might never return. I had fun writing the music during FAWM. Hopefully, I'll have just as much fun writing the play next month.

RE: Musicals!

Having done a screenplay last year, I toyed with the idea of doing another one but I'm currently planning on finally bringing to life a musical/operetta that I've had mulling around my brain since it was inspired by a dream many moons ago.

It's sort of Gilbert & Sullivan meets Shakespearian comedy & Georgette Heyer. At least, it is in my head! If it transfers to the page even half as well then I'll be happy!

I plan on writing the songs but not coming up with more than the melody to them as I'm not knowledgeable enough to orchestrate a suitable backing.

I'm just torn between the plot in my dream, which was more like a Restoration Comedy or the plot I've mainly sketched out in my head, which is more Shakespearian.

RE: Musicals!

My script is a musical centering around a girl's conflict with getting her holiday shopping done. *pokes her signature* The Rent-A-Cop Who Stole Christmas. It'll (hopefully) be a comedy.

RE: Musicals!

I am not alone! Yay!

I'm attempting a stage musical as well, based on the exciting world of standardized testing. I have no musical background, so I'm parodying songs from other famous musicals for my mini-score. My mind was spinning yesterday (uh... as I spent the entire day proctoring the TAKS test, staring at my students as they bubbled in their scantrons...) and I started writing the new lyrics in my head. It took all my self-control not to write them down yet!!!

April will be here soon enough, I guess...
