Introductions

Hey everyone!

It's time to start another frenzied month! I hope everyone is getting excited.

I will be your ML again this year. Last year was a little shaky as it was the first year, but together I know we can have a great Frenzy.

If you have questions, feel free to ask. I am addicted to my computer, so I can promise to answer you quite quickly.

So let's here what your plans are for April. Do you have one yet? Are you already in head over heels with researching and planning? Are you just starting to poke at ideas?

I will be writing an adaptation of one of my favourite novels, Black Sun Rising by C.S. Friedman. This is the first novel of the Coldfire trilogy. This is a high fantasy piece that will definately challenge my imagination. It is something I have wanted to try for the longest time and am really glad to have a chance.

RE: Introductions

Don't let writing a script freak you out. It is not too bad. I have found that writing scripts has actually improve my prose so much more. A script is large dialogue based, which has forced me to practice and improve at writing dialogue so now during Nanowrimo, my novel dialogue is more natural and less like two stiff manicanes.

My biggested suggestion would be to either use a program like Celtx (or Final Draft if you are willing to pay $$$ [I use Final Draft because I got a free copy and it is a fairly industry standard]) or save formatting for later.

The software programs will format as you write. If you don't like the programs however, I would suggest that you set aside time at the start or end of each writing session to add in formatting so that when you are writing, you can just go with wasting time playing with margins, etc.

Alright that is enough of my guide to survive frenzy for now!

Back to your regular scheduled programming....

(I am so lame sometimes. LOL)

RE: Introductions

Hello!

This is my first Script Frenzy, which I heard about from NaNoWriMo back in November. I'm co-writing a script with a friend of mine. We're both in high school here in Ottawa.

Is formatting a large part of the challenge?

RE: Introductions

Welcome ashen.rain! It's nice to see some new faces!

You do not have to format your script at all to be declared a winner.

However to write a proper script, you should be following the guidelines for the type of script you are doing. See the Writer's Resource tab for lots of great info.

This formatting can be done during the month or it can be done at a later point in time. Coming from a Nanowrimo background, 100 pages seems REALLY SHORT, so I force myself to make formatting a large part of the competition. I use Final Draft so that it self formats with me (occasionally I will have to press tab to switch from action to character, but otherwise it pretty much knows what type of script element I am typing. It also have a Smart Type function that will automatically try and guess what I am typing for major things like Character/Scene headers. Saves me from typing: EXT. JAGGONATH - CIANI'S STORE - EVENING several times over).

Also note that proper editting will make your pages a lot shorter than the standard page of prose usually is because of the large margins and lots of white space.

Using programs like Celtx or Final Draft makes your formatting at lot easier because the program automatically formats for you. If you are going to be using one of these programs for this first time, I suggest you write a short five-ten page script this month to get comfortable with the program.

Basically make sure you understand what formatting your script will need and even if you are typing in word, a script program, or even on paper, try to use at least minimal formatting as you go. It can be as simple as:

SCENE HEADER

Action. Action. Action.

NAME
Dialogue.

NAME
Dialogue.

If you just do it simple like that, it is alot easier to go back at a later point and add in the proper margins and stuff.

This is just a nutshell and my opinion. You need to find what will work for you. For more information on formatting and all that jazz, check out the Formatting Questions forum section and the Writer's Resource tab at the top.

Or ask me! LOL. That's my job...to attempt to answer all your questions without confusing you or myself for that matter.

RE: Introductions

Howdy

I'm Melinda, and I'm back for the second year of Frenzy. I'm more excited about this year's Frenzy than I was last year (I wasn't prepared at all lol). I've done nanowrimo for three years and only won once as I am not the greatest at novel writing. Script writing is more of my thing. So far I have a few ideas brewing up in my mind. I might do an adaptation of my 2007 novel called The Mission but in a role reversal. I might make a scripted documentary of a female one hit wonder who is mysteriously murdered at an award show. Lastly I've been itching to write a music about a woman who loses her love due to a racial murder (for some odd reason I like to write about murders and dramas lol) or I might change that plot to her loved one being kidnapped and thrown in the ocean alive. Lastly I'm thinking about writing a television series/pilot. I don't know what the story is going to be yet as I'm still thinking about it.

Sincerely Mindy

Welcome back Mindy!

All your ideas some really interesting.

Last year's Frenzy was tough on me too. I guess the first year is always the hardest.

RE: Introductions

Hey Kay!

Im back again, i checked out the writers resources and have gotten myself set up on scripped.com. I'm actually extremely excited for this thing, and formatting looks like a piece of cake since i have SOME type of software. Thanks a bunch!

As for other goings on, i was wondering what you guys are thinking plot-wise. Tv? Screenplay? Stageplay?

As for me, I'm writing a tv pilot and the second episode (1 hour long each). Its kind of like a Supernatural meets Dark Angel meets the Invisible. Weird, hard to explain, i'll try to repost when i have the idea straight in my own head :S

Anyways, best of luck! Can't wait for this thing to start!

RE: Introductions

I am doing a full length movie (possibly longer than one would ever actually watch LOL) adaptation of the novel Black Sun Rising by C.S. Friedman. The novel is kind of science fiction (set in the future) but feels mostly fantasy. It is quite dark and character driven.

RE: Introductions

Hi, all. I'm doing the frenzy partly to punch up my dialogue skills, partly to nudge along my flagging productivity, and partly for the lark of it all. It's good to know that I'm not the only one who isn't particularly interested in script writing as lifestyle!

I wanted to do a kind of deconstruction of Lord of the Rings, reimagine it to have more modern relevance (and more women who do stuff) similar to the way they reconfigured Battlestar Galactica in the new series. I think it could be really cool, but -- uh -- I haven't got round to planning it.

So instead I'm adapting a letter game I've been playing into a television pilot. It's a cracked out fantasy story about the colonial mindset, the ecology of trolls, and the perils of mail-order betrothal.
