Old radio shows! |
all those old radio shows are amazing, especially the shadow and the twilight zone. Does anybody else still listen to these, or know where to find some on the interweb?

They are wonderful, aren't they?
There is a site that you can listen online, and some place that you can download one at at time. However, I don't remember their URLs.
The website that I use is OTRCAT (Old Time Radio CATalog). They have lots of radio shows that they have put on CDs in MP3 format (and some in regular audio format). I've purchased several Detective and Science Fiction radio shows and listen to them while walking.
I was wondering if anyone nowadays is doing Radio Shows, or even MP3 shows. Probably not, but it would be fun to find.

Yes! The BBC does lots of radio drama, primarily on Radio 4 and BBC7. Radio 4 is the flagship, with the Afternoon Play, the Friday Play, the Saturday Play, the Classic Serial, Women's Hour Drama, a soap opera called The Archers (running since 1951 -- 15,000+ episodes!), plus various short-run dramas. Right now, for example, they're running a dramatization of the Terry Pratchett sci-fi novel Night Watch, which isn't available online. For the rest of it, the last week of shows is generally available online as a stream.
I love Radio 4's drama. It's what makes my workday bearable.
Wikipedia has an entry on radio drama, with a few links at the bottom to downloadable things (old & new, I think) from elsewhere.

Search on iTunes for "old time radio"— there are a ton of podcasts out there providing the golden oldies, absolutely free; and there's new works too. My recommendations, of the new stuff, are Wormwood (a supernatural mystery) and a Doctor Who show called Time Tales.
What are everyone's favourite shows, recent or otherwise? I love most hardboiled detective stuff, but the best in my book would have to be Pat Novak For Hire, Richard Diamond, Nero Wolfe, and The Saint (with Vincent Price). And of course, the Shadow is wonderful.

I love radio dramas! I always had luck finding some on itunes in the podcast section.
There was this really great one I liked, I think it was called Six Shooter, with Jimmy Stewart, it's a western.
Also, there is some AM radio station in my area that plays them late at night on weekends, but I never remember which station it is.

You should check out www.darkerprojects.com and www.pendantaudio.com/. they are both producers of new radio drama. Pendent has a program called "Umket Industries Presents: The Dixie Stenberg and Brassy Battalion Adventure Theater" that is styled after old time radio, but all the stuff at both sites is really great and a lot of fun to listen to.

BBC7 is a good place to start for old BBC shows; everything comes round there eventually.

You can listen to three free Twilight Zone plays at www.twilightzoneradio.com
The Twilight Zone is my favorite by the way, and the only radio plays I've heard, really. But the entire genre is so fascinating! I'll love any radio play.

Is anyone actually writing a script in this genre? I would love to but didn't know this genre was available and so already had my heart set on writing a musical stage play. What will your subjects be? I'm very interested to hear everyone's ideas even though I'm not participating in this genre this year. There's always next year... :)

Twilight Zone was not a radio drama, but TV. Rod Serling was an award winning TV script writer during the 50's and early 60's doing heavy mainstream drama like "Requiem for a heavyweight" for shows like Circle Theatre and Playhouse 90. He proposed Twilight Zone on the weight of his reputation alone.
The Radio drama you are thinking of is probably Inner Sanctum with the creaking door and the scary voice.
The Shadow was Old time radio. Some others included: Fibber McGee and Molly, Gunsmoke, The Guiding Light, Bulldog Drummond, Little Orphan Annie, the Lone Ranger and Mercury Radio Theatre (which produced the War of the Worlds).

RE: Old radio shows! |
I'm doing, one that can be done as radio drama and I'm torn whether to do it as a stage play or radio.
It's a supposed news broadcast set 24 hours after the rapture of the church. Back in the 70's, I produced a similar play as a radio drama at the univeristy. But I'm leaning more toward the stage play that churches could perform. But I'm still open to ideas. News talk radio might be an interesting variation.
