RE: Howdy Hawaii! |
I know nothing about an ML, but I figured I could at least introduce myself here, why not?
This is my first time with script frenzy ... i attempted NaNo last year but I was in the middle of moving from mainland, so ...I got about 25 pages done! =P I'm looking forward to Script Frenzy, but I can't decide if I want to fulfill a life-long dream by adapting a certain novel (which I would want my partner for) or creating something completely new and original! I'll probably go for adaptation for simplicity's sake for my first year, I guess!
Anyways, break a leg!

I've done Nano for two years now... finished both times.. hope this won't fry my brain... 100 pages... wow..
I'm working on a spec script for a show that av. 60 pages.. maybe i'll do a full spec and get started on a second.. 2/3 started huh?

Hey Raye (and DuckieChaos)!
Jon and Kelly said they were going to ML again, and Jon is listed as the ML for Hawaii, but I haven't heard anything from them, so who knows? They've been pretty busy lately.
What show are you writing a script for? If you haven't already, check out Jane Espenson's blog at http://www.janeespenson.com. She's a (former) writer for Buffy, Angel, Gilmore Girls, Battlestar Galactica, etc. Tons of great advice.
I think you'll find writing a script is a cakewalk after NaNo ...

Aloha Hawaii!
In case you go off looking at my profile or whatnot, yes, I live in New York. I'm posting here because I was just accepted into Kapi'olani Community college, am hoping to go to UoH Manoa, and I figured it would be a good idea if I started trying to make some friends ^_^ I'm so excited to go to Hawaii because it's possible I have roots over there and am hoping to find out!
I'm a martial arts instructor here, participated in Nano for three years, this is my second year for SF and also for MLing for my region (I also MLed for the last Nano too). I can't make up my mind as to what script I want to work on, so far it seems a sequel to my last year's martial arts script is the winning idea.
So, that's it really. I'm really looking forward to this April, looking foward to August even more, good luck to you all and here's to hoping maybe I'll meet you guys in the fall!

RE: Howdy Hawaii! |
Hey, welcome! I go to UHM and my husband's at KCC. KCC's campus is way prettier. You'll love it, especially the cactus garden.
And hey everyone else too! This is my first script frenzy, but I did nano in november, so I've got high hopes.
Anyone have advice/opinions regarding various (free) scriptwriting software? I saw the page they have up here, but personal experience and opinions would be appreciated.
peace,
kati

RE: Howdy Hawaii! |
Hey Kati - I've been test-driving Celtx and it looks pretty good. Actually easier than FinalDraft, which I used to have long ago. Your other option is using a template in Word (my usual strategy). Stay away from Scripped - it's internet only (like GoogleDocs, but with fewer export options).
Advantages to Celtx: takes care of your formatting for you, easier than a template, generates nifty reports (all the dialog for just one character, index cards for each scene, etc.) Also has some production-side stuff that you probably won't need (e.g. make notes on any livestock or animal handlers required by the script ...) Also, it's beta software (release .997) - it probably works just fine (it worked just fine on the short sample I tried) but some folks have experienced data loss and corruption. Back up frequently - but you'll have to cut and paste because Celtx won't export to .txt or .rtf.
Advantages to Word: only one really - you will ALWAYS be able to open a Word .doc. Celtx stores stuff in .celtx format (can also export PDF). If you want, you can copy and paste to another app, but what a pain. I used to use FinalDraft but no longer have a copy (I've upgraded computers a few times). Now I've got a raft of FinalDraft files that I can't open without paying for another copy of the program. Lame. Not a big deal for ScriptFrenzy, but it would suck to come back to your screenplay a few years down the road and not be able to read it because the software didn't work under Windows 8 and the company was out of business.
Anyway .. try Celtx. I think you'll like it. If you use it, back up frequently - but you'll have to cut and paste because Celtx won't export to .txt or .rtf.

RE: Howdy Hawaii! |
Well, well, well, I'm glad to see some activity in here! Sorry I've been incognito for so long-- Kelly and I were doing some Wedding Planning, and midterms destroyed my life!! However, whoohoo time to write again! I'm stoked for this!
Oh, and by the way, I'm Jon! (or Jonathon, or whatever you wanna call me that isn't offensive ^_~) Yes, I am the "official" ML this year (which is really exciting, of course), and Kelly will be helping out when she can with stuff she can. I will be back later to talk some more...I'm gonna go and try and recruit some more people!

Wow, so you all are in college? How's an old guy like me supposed to keep up?
Anyway, by way of an intro: I'm a former musician/DJ turned computer geek--hence the "bitmaestro" nic; "bit" as in byte and "maestro" as in music--turned aspiring screenwriter. I decided to join the Frenzy because, after a couple of TV specs, I'm starting on a feature spec. So the timing is perfect.
Oh well, enough procrastinating. I guess I better get writing.
