RE: We Love Latin!

I WISH I knew latin, does that count? That is definitely one of the classes I'll take in college. Along with French. But who's counting?

RE: We Love Latin!

Amo Latinam!!! I love Latin. Or perhaps it loves me?

I've been taking Latin for 6 years now, and I still love the language--even though I'm translating Books 1 and 2 in the Aeneid for the second time. It's still fun, and I enjoy it. Speaking of which, I have an essay due on Monday for said class. My favorite translations so far are: Plautus' "Menaechmi", Ovid's "Metamorphoses", and Catullus--and of course, Vergil's "Aeneid". I disliked Terrence (for some strange reason).

Does anyone here participate in JCL/SCL? If so, have you gone to State's Latin Conventions or National's Latin Conventions? They're a blast! (And so full of Latin and Greek.) Some day I'll take Greek...but right now I'm satisfied with Latin. (cough-yeahright-cough)

RE: We Love Latin!

Only one thing to say: I love Latin because it is the base for Spanish.

RE: We Love Latin!

I'm in my first year of Latin right now. My Latin teacher is such a character, he kicks desks across the room, rambles in Italian, and wastes time talking about Roman history during class. And that's only scratching the surface. One time he ran down the hall, barfed, then came back and started teaching again as if nothing happened...such a strange, strange person.

But, yeah, Latin is pretty awesome, it's the only language I've ever succeeded in (I failed 7th grade Spanish miserably).

RE: We Love Latin!

Latin. Somehow I think in Latin even though I hardly know the language. The grammar, anyway. I know most of the words because they came down to us in English and all the Romance languages, plus I have a Latin/English dictionary. If the Romans had not conquered Europe, there would be no Romance languages, or they would be stuck in one country like Armenian, Albanian, and Greek. Plus the Spaniards, Portuguese, and French inherited the Roman imperialist tradition, else we wouldn't have so many people outside Europe speaking their languages. (I won't mention that other empire based in the former Roman province of Britannia, where a certain Germanic language is spoken...)

I know the words. I should get off my behind, check out a book or two from the library, and learn the grammar. Learning Latin makes learning the Romance languages easier, too.

First year latin student right here.
Latin is fun times!
I'm not exceptional in class, but whenever I'm there I swear I can just feel my head making brain cells to put all them words in. @__@ It's like, "whoa".

RE: We Love Latin!

I tried to teach myself for 3 years. Then I started college and took one class. But I was just taking latin for fun, so the next semester when the next latin class happened to be at the same time as the vastly more important film classes, I had to stop. Now I'm back to occasionally busting out the textbooks and trying to learn but it really really doesn't work.

But I love latin and wish I knew it better.

RE: We Love Latin!

I think its hard to teach yourself a language, not so much because the language is difficult, but because of the lack of support and friends you can make in taking one with a class/group. Thus, while I love Latin, I do not plan to major in it (minor, perhaps yes) but Biology get's the primary spot.

Fortunately, I just found out that I can take Latin again next semester without it conflicting in my schedule! Joys! We're translating Cicero, which ought to be interesting (a friend of mine just did Cicero and he seemed to like it well enough). Anyway, I'll just be happy to survive this semester of Latin 303: Vergil, since the essay I just wrote was not very good. "Oh three and four times blessed are they who fell before the walls of Troy"...if that were but me.

Good luck to all you Latin takers out there. Check out these sites if you're interested: www.njcl.org (Junior Classical League for jr/sr high schoolers) and www.nscl.org (Senior Classical League for college + above).

RE: We Love Latin!

I love Latin! I've been taking Latin for two years and it is easily my favorite class. It happens to amuse me, a lot, and my teacher is just so insane. She enjoys beating students with dry erase boards, telling students to drop out of high school, and throwing tantrums.

Yeah, I'm amused by the class. The language is amazing too.
