Strange tquestion?

Do you think it is a good idea to still specify adverts in the script as the BBC over here in the U.K. does not have adverts on there programmes.

RE: Strange tquestion?

How do you mean, specify? Do you mean put something in like "Break for advertisements" in the script?

You don't. Even in American scripts, the advert breaks are determined by the four-act format--which, as I understand it, is more commonly a three-act format in the UK. Check out http://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom for more info; they've got LOADS of information on formatting, and lots of scripts for download. Doctor Who, Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes, Doctors, Hotel Babylon... you'd be surprised. They also have a .pdf file that explains formatting in very easy-to-understand terms.

RE: Strange tquestion?

You know, I had the same exact question.

What exactly is the four-act format?

I find myself writing scenes that feel about as long as the typical scene in a TV series before a commerical, just because it's coming naturally. And in some cases, the commerical break is actually a great device.

But I'm not specifying "commerical" in my script, I'm more or less just going to a new scene and assuming that's where a commerical should go.

RE: Strange tquestion?

I think what you need to do is decide which netwrok you're aiming your script to and adjust things for that. Rememeber that because there are no commercial breaks on the BBC, the script itself will be longer.

RE: Strange tquestion?

I wouldn't put the commercial breaks in. That's something that editing choses. If you're timing your acts right, the breaks should come naturally after each act.
