Tech Thread

I thought maybe we could share what we've got, so if you're having problems, others locally can help you. Or if you have tips, that's cool too!

(You pen and paper people can lord it over us with your lack of crashing, I know.)

I'm using a Windows XP Laptop, and I've gotten Celtx and StoryLines (by Writer's Cafe). I think StoryLines will be great for decoding my Nano novel, but it may be overkill for my one-acts, but I haven't poked around with it at all.

I also got Q10 (http://www.baara.com/q10/) for write-ins or just doing focused free-writers. No formatting, no distractions. Just amber screen (or whatever you choose) and GO.

For backups, I use Mozy - it automatically backs up everything I tell it to nightly to a remote server. I also tend to email myself copies of whatever I'm working on (gmail is great!)

So what's everyone else here using?

RE: Tech Thread

I'll be using Celtx and possibly Q10 - that was a lifesaver during the last week of NaNo, for me anyway. I'll be emailing myself my back-ups, if I can work Celtx the way I think it works.

I might also bring pen/pencil/spiral notebook, depending on how much I want to carry.

RE: Tech Thread

Ya, I just discovered Celtx a few days ago, and I'm learning to adapt it to Graphic Novel purposes.

RE: Tech Thread

I grabbed Celtx the day before I had to fly to Reno for a week so I haven't had much time to actually mess around with it like I want to (a little less than 6 hours 35 minutes to go LOL). That's on my home computer, I use Google Docs and Notepad at work and I have one of those black and white writing journals and a few mechanical pencils in my car for lunch breaks. I also carry around a itty-bitty spiral bound notepad (2.5" x 2.5") in my pocket for those moments I get random ideas. I tried using a cassette recorder but found dictating to my own voice was a bit too eerie/weird for me.

RE: Tech Thread

Can you import things into Celtx? how much reformatting work does it take? Thanks!

95% of my word count (of Nanowrimo) was thanks to write-ins. Thank you!!

RE: Tech Thread

I'm using Scripped.com right now, simply because online reachability is good. Also, it prevents me from messing up my train of thought with funky formatting.

Otherwise, I have my trusty notebook for writing (Caeraerie's #1 rule about writing: any time is a good time), my OpenOffice software on all three of my home computers, and a serious dream to make it to the top of the SF dogpile.

RE: Tech Thread - widgets, progress bars, scoreboard notes

PROGRESS BAR NOTE --

it's still configured by last year's rules, which counted to 20,000 words. So if you want an accurately displayed percentage, multiply your page count by 200. Or put in your word count, not your page count. (This also explains why some people are displaying 2800 pages written -- it's really only 14 pages, but they wanted the progress bar to "feel right." )

No word yet on scoreboards, so I'm not sure how we'll manage the challenge info. It's on the tech list of stuff to fix, but not terribly high up, it seems.

RE: Tech Thread - widgets, progress bars, scoreboard notes

As you may have noticed, PROGRESS BARS ARE BACK TO NORMAL! So if you had a x200 pagecount, please cut it back to normal. Thanks!
