How is a page being defined?

I've been asked this question a few times and I haven't found a good answer yet (not sure if the answer has been publised yet, either, since the verification tools are not online yet)...

So, a "page"... is it a certain number of words? a certain number of lines?

The uncertainty here is that my formatted 8.5 by 11 inch page is going to have margins of some size, a font size, line spacing, etc, all of which will impact the number of words or lines that fit. A text file does not contain page breaks, so there won't be a marker to count for that.

I'm not terribly worried about it, but I'd like to be able to answer the folks who are asking about it. So, is there an FAQ entry that explains how a page is defined?

We're not ignoring you ... just lookin' for the answer.

(I think the hope is to define a page by a standard number of lines. But I'm not sure how that's going to be calcuated for the verification system.)

RE: How is a page being defined?

I didn't feel ignored at all! My question is vague, but I've had about 6 or 7 people ask me as I tried to explain what my wife, kids and I are doing next month... some of them want to join based on our excitement, but they're curious about how the page counting will work.

Thanks for the reply!

RE: How is a page being defined?

I don't know the answer to this, but just to stick my two cents' in .... I'm using Final Draft, as I'm sure some (many?) others are, and, since it defines a page automatically, maybe it would be useful as a standard.

RE: How is a page being defined?

I think counting lines is not possible if the verificator reads only txt files because then it notices the line breaks only if the writer uses enter key at the end of each line. (Am I right?)

And in different script types the line lenght may vary too, so you can not define a line lenght by a standard number of characters, either.

I can't figure out any other verificator types than a pdf verificator but that might cause some problems too. In any case, it would be simplier if you just define 100 pages as 20,000 words. :D

RE: How is a page being defined?

Stay tuned; we are currently working on the answer, and the final result may in fact not be a plain text file. I promise we'll have you an answer VERY soon!

RE: How is a page being defined?

I look forward to it since I'm currently updating my page count based on the page count in the file. I'll look a bit daft if it comes out way lower.

RE: How is a page being defined?

I'm not sure how you define pages. I'm using Celtx, and it doesn't show page breaks. To see how much I've written and update my page count, I'm just copy-pasting it all into Word. I don't know whether that's right or not, but it's all I've got to go by.

RE: How is a page being defined?

Tali - in Celtx just click on the tab at the bottom that says "TypeSet" and it will convert it into pages for you.

My questions is, do I use A4 or US letter size page??

I've looked all over and I can't find this tab you're talking about.

RE: How is a page being defined?

Safaia - Down the bottom of the page where you write your script in Celtx should show a tab saying 'Script', and next to it a tab saying 'TypeSet' and beyond that 'Index Cards' etc.

Hope that helps ^^
