Gah! I'm stuck! AGAIN! [Venting Thread]

Find yourself coming to a standstill? Have no idea what to write? Found a plot hole that you absolutely need to work around before you can go any further? This is the thread to just whine and complain about all your woes.

And I think I'll start...eleven pages in, fourth scene of a musical, and I'm already tired of rhyming and have no clue what's going to happen next scene, because my muses are MIA! TT~TT

5 pages in, stuck because I put my characters in the exact type of socially awkward spot I personally don't know how to get out of!

Need help? I might be able to offer some! Social awkwardness is something I experience quite often.

Tell us the situation. I am very used to being in socially awkward situations and weaseling my way out of them. Maybe we can help.

RE: Gah! I'm stuck! AGAIN! [Venting Thread]

I'll bring a book to the write-ins I come to called "solving your script" (or something like that) -- maybe it can help.

My "1 page" is just the title page -- I'm depending on the write-ins to get me going.

RE: Gah! I'm stuck! AGAIN! [Venting Thread]

I started over this morning after going to bed last night questioning my script. "Is it good enough?" "What am I doing wrong?" and during the night I had a vivid dream that caused me to have second thoughts of my script. So, this morning, I tossed the old one to the curb and started on a new one. In one day I caught up to my previous page count, and then some. I think this new script is much more "human" and a lot easier for me to pull into.

At the same time I'm kicking myself for starting over.

My suggestion: bookmark the old script for later retrieval. Some time around the end of Week Two, you'll hit a roadblock. At that point, pull the old script, grab a random quote out of it and work it into your current script.

And the roadblock will go down before 73 tons of unstoppable writing energy.

Yes, it works that well.

Well, don't kick yourself too hard. Making the decision to start over only four days in was a good one. If you'd waited longer, you would've found yourself in a pickle.

RE: Gah! I'm stuck! AGAIN! [Venting Thread]

I know i'm supposed to be the cheerleader, but I'm feeling very blah and vague and blocked and depressed, BUT because I have yet another new class starting today (intro expository writing, at Axia college), I can't get into the "deep feeling" mode I need for writing, because I need to be bland and professional. I feel like if I were dedicating myself fully into this project, I'd start "living teh drama" and getting in a fight with a semi-supervisor (we passionately disagree about teaching methods.)

Does any of this make sense?

RE: Gah! I'm stuck! AGAIN! [Venting Thread]

Oh yes, I feel your pain. I have a harder time writing when I have to be all surface and no depth; blandness silences my muse.

I'll give you a few things here and hope they will help.

1. A hug. You sound like you need one.
2. A small challenge. Use the word "deregulatory" in your next five lines that you write. Doesn't matter how you get it in there (dictionary definition, news broadcast, headline on newpaper, whatever). Just use it, 'cause it's a funny word. And if you're brave enough, post the excerpt!
3. Have the fight...on paper. Write a letter to the super, and it does not have to be grammatically correct or even logical. Rant. Rave. Throw a screaming hissy fit if that's what you need to break out of the surface mold. Then, tonight, after you have moved on from the letter to the script because the mental blocks have dropped like xenon-filled balloons, you can quietly and calmly shred/burn the letter if you want.

Or hey, add it to your portfolio of writing. It'll make a great conversation-starter later on!

Good luck!

RE: Gah! I'm stuck! AGAIN! [Venting Thread]

Thanks, Caeraerie! I ended up writing a bit of a Mary Sue scene (to boost my word count), of what would be going through the supervisor's head, as I blew off the meeting, as she railed against my assignments, but clearly revealing to the audience how brilliant I am (or the "Mary Sue" is.) It was cool to bend her to my will like that, and by keeping myself (or my mary sue self) out of the scene, I didn't actually say anything bad, so i don't have a memory of being inappropriate -- just of her realizing my brilliance, but not wanting to admit it to anyone. :)
