the brilliant green is, well, brilliant, and they do have some songs that could potentially fit what you're doing. They're rock, with a female singer (Tomoko Kawase)... Their influences are all over the map, so they're difficult to describe, beyond that. A lot of their songs are in English, though between Tomoko's accent, and the odd rhythm of certain lines in some songs it's sometimes hard to tell. The lyrics often include some charmingly odd images.
Specific great songs touching on the topics you mention (though not neccessarily the aspects you mean) -
Funny Girlfriend!!
Rainy Days Never Stays
I Never Dreamed
Good Bye and Good Luck (I'm particularly fond of the version on the Ash Like Snow single.)
Tomoko's solo projects - Tommy february6 and Tommy heavenly6 (paryicularly heavenly) - are also great. Tommy february is very 80s pop, and heavenly more...pop-punk and indy influenced.
