Hi there,
I'm writing a 5 Act play. Currently nearing the end of Act 4.
I think that much of the time there is little difference between a 3 act and 5 act play.
As long as the standard plot curve is there then breaking it in to acts is almost a formnality. My play could actually quite easily be a 4 act play!
Although I do have the 'formulaic' exposition and character introduction in Act 1; the inciting moment in Act 2 and the climax in Act 3; my falling action and resolution in Act 5 sort of merge in to one and could really be lumped together as a gigantic Act 4.
I grew up with 5 act plays so I guess that's probably why I'm inclined that way and that probably goes for most of us.
When I was first introduced to 3 act plays and the 1 act - 1 SCENE plays of the Ancient Greeks it did seem a bit odd to me. If you look hard enough though, you will still see that same old universal plot curve.
