An Excerpt from Best of Intentions (Operation Bodice Ripper)
ISABELLA
We’re going to create romance for Natalie.
GUYS
Huh?
ISABELLA
We’re going to show her, prove to her, that the rest of high school doesn’t have to be an academic drag. She can balance fun and romance. She needs these things. She needs to cut loose!
MARCUS
(to David)
… Footloose?
KEVIN
How exactly do you plan on creating romance? Isn’t romance supposed to be spontaneous?
ISABELLA
Great romantic encounters don’t happen all by themselves, just out of nowhere.
KEVIN
So you’re talking about creating a metaphorical, scripted and carefully directed great romantic moment, the kind that don’t actually exist in real life? Are you rambling about staging romantic scenes?
ISABELLA
More along the lines of facilitating. We find the perfect guy, set the scene … and she’ll melt in a heartbeat.
KEVIN
Has Natalie ever melted over anything that wasn’t at the zoo?
ISABELLA
So we’ll go to the freakin’ zoo! But Natalie has plenty of other interests. We’ll match ‘em up with the right guy ...
DAVID
Oh – Marcus and I met this totally hot – (fending off wary looks from Isabella and Kevin) AND STRAIGHT chef’s apprentice [title?] at this party a couple weeks ago! He could bump into her at the farmer’s market...
MARCUS
You mean the guy who’s gonna butcher animals for a living?
DAVID
Um. OK, well, what about one of her nature hikes? Can’t those be romantic?
MARCUS
Dirty, sweaty, panting, gasping ...
KEVIN
(smirking)
Sounds like a good time to me.
Kevin and Marcus high-five.
