An Excerpt from The Writer's Network

BLUE:

Mr. Nick, Jazz is sad because Mommy's dead. But if she's in a better place, like Mrs. Burbage said, how can she be dead, too?

NICK squats down so he is eye level with BLUE.

NICK:

Don't think of your mother as dead, Blue. Think of where she is as...as a safe place, where nothing can hurt her. A safe place where she can wait for the world to be a little bit nicer, and a little bit better. And then, one day, you'll be able to see her again. Both of you.

BLUE:

A safe place?

NICK:

A very safe place. Have faith in that. Sometimes safe places are the best you can hope for.

JAZZ:

I don't think it's a very good idea to make promises when you don't know you can keep them.

JAZZ looks at NICK warningly-he doesn't want to give BLUE false hopes that their mother might return.

NICK:

(looking directly at JAZZ)

On the contrary, Jazz, I think it is. I think it very wise for both of you to have faith. Even when you don't know what you're having faith in.

JAZZ looks at NICK, confused. NICK looks at him intently, as if he is trying to tell JAZZ something.
