This is a rather fancy church. Very large and grand, with stained glass and gold and velvet draping curtains. Over the wide shot, we hear Paul’s voice.
PAUL (O.S.)
Forgive me, father.
CUT TO:
Paul sits, with his head bowed, barely outlined by the light filtering through the grate in the middle. Heavy pause.
PAUL
I have sinned.
PRIEST (O.C.)
Tell me your sins.
Paul doesn’t speak for a moment. The priest waits.
PAUL
I’ve done... is there a limit on this?
PRIEST
...pardon?
PAUL
I mean, I know that this is all supposed to be confidential. My friend used to be a priest. But what if someone told you something so terrible that you...
(beat)
Is there a limit on how bad something can be before you have to tell someone?
PRIEST
(warm, practiced)
Nothing you say inside these walls leaves. We believe that it’s the worst of sins which should be confessed, anyway. It’s not our place to get the police involved. It would be much worse to leave it to God’s judgment. Please, tell me what you’ve wronged.
Paul sighs.
PAUL
I was... traveling with a man. A friend. From college.
CUT TO:
"Music cue: God's Gonna Cut You Down - Johnny Cash"
Tobias and Riff walk across the stark flat landscape towards the prison gates. A ticket office sits unattended by the entrance. Paul’s monologue continues.
PAUL (V.O.)
We had some... skills. A knowledge of things which not many people knew about, and we exploited that.
Riff and Toby approach the ticket office. Riff dings the bell. They wait, Riff looking confident and rehearsed, Toby looking nervous.
PAUL (V.O.) (CONT’D)
We used it to make money. We conned people.
A heavyset middle-aged woman wearing a visor and a fanny pack bustles over to the window, smiling.
PAUL (V.O.)(CONT’D)
We let people die.
Riff smiles back. Shark-like.
BLACKOUT.
