An Excerpt from August's Tears
SHAY
Cole!
COLE
(shouting)
What?
SHAY
(caught off guard)
Just - Cole -
COLE
Stop saying my name if you're not going to say anything.
SHAY
I don't understand what happened. I don't understand what I did, I don't understand why you're -
COLE
Just go.
Shay shakes her head stubbornly.
COLE
Shay!
She jumps at the sound of her name.
COLE
You shouldn't have...
SHAY
What?
COLE
You shouldn't have done this. You shouldn't have come here, you shouldn't have pushed it. And you should go now.
SHAY
(softly)
Yeah. I got that you wanted me gone.
A beat.
SHAY
You really want me gone?
COLE
Yes.
Shay shakes her head.
SHAY
Happy birthday.
COLE
Yeah. Thanks.
He gets up and walks into a building, out of sight. Shay stares after him and then falls back against the bench. She presses her hands to her eyes and takes a shuddering breath. She sits up straighter, composes herself, and pulls out her phone.
SHAY
Hey. I changed my mind.
