Who's written a script before? |
Hey folks,
so I noticed there are TONS of "How do I write a script?", "Help! I have no script!", "Hi, I'm new!" forums for all the awesome up-and-coming screnziers out there. However, there is a noticeable shortage of forums for folks who've written scripts before.
So this is the place for those of you who've written scripts for screnzy, class, fun, tv/film/theatre, contests, comics/manga, etc. so that we can share in your triumphs, learn from your advice and enjoy your company. Doesn't matter what kind of script it was or if the only people who've read it are you and your mom, you're welcome here!
So a little about me:
I'm an editor/writer who's written five scripts so far. Haven't sold them yet but I did enter the Nick Writing Fellowship and the Creative Screenwriting AAA Contest this year so fingers-crossed. My hope is to become a professional screenwriter for tv and film with an emphasis on animation.
What's your story?

RE: Who's written a script before? |
I'm in the midst of writing three scripts right now, and that's going to include Scriptfreny's. I finished one which I'm truly proud of. Sadly I have not entered it in to any contests yet because I want to make sure it's perfect. I think I've edited it to death, but I just need make sure it's what I thought in my head. You know? Anyway, yes I've written a script before.
I'm aspiring to become a writer for the film. I want to go to college for filmmaking. My sister and I are actually trying to start a production company for my films. Because not only do I want to write for the screen, but also I want to direct it. :) Good luck to you all!

RE: Who's written a script before? |
My BA is in theatre/speech so I've written a couple of scripts for various classes. Only one (my thesis) has gone all the way through the editing process and it's a one act that's been performed three separate times now. I've never attempted to sell it or get it published, though I've said a number of times that I would like write several more and turn it into a book of one acts. One of these days...
Right now I write in my free time and dream of turning it into a career so that I can give it the time it deserves. A nice writing retreat in the mountains would be nice too.

RE: Who's written a script before? |
I wrote a few a few years ago. I got a small award in a small contest with one of them. I also wrote a one-act stage play. Then I took a few years off and got more education and had no time for fun writing.
Now, with education complete and no jobs to be found, I've written one more screenplay and I'm half done with another. I've got an idea for a third for my screnzy screenplay.
One of these days I'd actually like to sell one or more of these. I do think I'm getting better.
For those entering contests, seriously consider Nicholl. It's probably the most prestigious when it comes to screenplays.

RE: Who's written a script before? |
I haven't written a complete script yet, but I've managed to get past the index card stage and write a treatment or two. And I have many, many script fragments, including entire sequences, scattered throughout my notebooks; many of them will find their way into my Screnzy script (it's a comic I've been working on, on and off, for years). I'm writing a screenplay adaptation of my current NaNoWriMo novel even as I'm editing it. Considering how much I've learned about screenplays and comics scripts over the years, writing a complete script will be far less of a problem for me than writing a novel (the first draft of Bad Company is a complete and utter mess; thus the screenplay, if only just to force it into shape).

RE: Who's written a script before? |
I did Screnzy last year and had done a couple of scripts before that. Right now I'm in the midst of writing a Television series and doing another script with a group of friends:)
Sadly, I don't plan on doing it for a career, though it would be fun, my heart is already in history:)I plan on being a Historian instead, but hey, I could use a back-up:)

COOL. Glad to have all of you on board. Congrats on taking the plunge.
I totally agree with entering the Nicholl. Not only is it legit (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences), prestigious (many winners have gone on to sell their scripts) and awesome ($30K prize), but it's also one of the cheaper contests out there (price tag: $30). Here's the link for those interested:

The deadline's not until May 1st so it's a great option for the scripts you've already got. And Script Frenzy if you're that magical and can edit/proof that fast.

RE: Who's written a script before? |
I've written four scripts before. Three have been based on the first three Resident Evil games and a fourth one was a new Jurassic Park script one I did for kicks and giggles that came in at around 160 pages.
Haven't really entered competitions with them, (constantly editing RE1 because I'm never happy with it) but I figure I'd do a original script for a competition like that one you mentioned rather than an adaptation.

RE: Who's written a script before? |
Hey everyone. I started screenwriting in August of last year, and I hope to do it professionally. I'm getting ready to submit one of my screenplays to a few competitions, so we'll see where that goes. By the way, thanks for the heads up on the Nicholl Fellowships!
Since August, I've written two original screenplays and have attempted to adapt my 2007 NaNo. I didn't do the planning I should have on the adaptation, so I've decided to go back to the drawing board on that one. I think I've finished up everything on the one I'm getting ready to submit, so I'm both enjoying a little downtime from writing and also getting anxious to get writing again. It's good to have the time to focus on planning, though. :-)
Cheers,
S

RE: Who's written a script before? |
I've spent most of my life backstage in theatre, film, and television. I'm now a full-time writer. I publish under a half a dozen names in both fiction and non-fiction. My plays have been produced in New York, London, Edinburgh, and Australia. I've written a couple of indie film scripts and co-written two television pilots (which are in perpetual turnaround). I was also commissioned to write a romantic comedy multi-media script for a Canadian company several years ago.
I'm finishing up a thriller screenplay, and I think I'll write a play for April -- not sure. I'm juggling other writing deadlines (no writing, no eating, no bill paying), but it's been awhile since I did any dedicated script writing, so I wanted to stretch those muscles for a bit.

RE: Who's written a script before? |
I've written a few, although the first two weren't in any proper format. In fact, they were so unformatted, most people couldn't figure it out. And of course, those two would be the only two I've done anything with since they were for school projects.
Besides those, I've written two that were actually readable for films, and about three for comic books. I don't really plan on doing much with them. My friends and I want to make the films, but we have a problem of not having time. One of my friends and I are also planning on eventually doing the comics too. We were talking about selling comics, but I don't know if we'll do that. Seems like too much work for us.
