I've heard of one act plays. I know of some plays in two acts (a modern trend). Tradition has three acts or five acts in a full length play. But what about 4 acts?

If you know of a play with 4 acts, can you just please tell me its name?

Can you think of a reason NOT to use 4 acts? (Am I crazy for thinking this is where I'm heading?)

I don't think it should be a problem. I don't know of plays with 4 acts, but why not experiment and see if it works.

The Importance of Being Earnest was originally four acts I believe. It was shortened to three, but sometimes the four are performed. But I agree with ReinaCriss: this is art!

Acts, in contemporary usage, imply act breaks. So, yeah, one good reason not to have 4 acts is that means 3 intermissions. Is your play going to be so long that it requires 3 intermissions? Of course you may find it useful to think of your play having 4 acts, structurally, but only planning for one intermission. Personally I'd call that a 2-act play.

The last play I saw that had three intermissions was Angels In America. So it happens, just not very often.
