Why is it called a screenplay "treatment"?

Like any other 'treatment', it just means the way you 'treat' something. I.e. your approach or method of dealing with a subject or situation. It's a way of saying "What I would do is this...", or "This is the way I'd treat it..."

I am learning, more than a treatment, and of far greater importance is my ability to summarize my 100+ page screenplay in only one logline sentence! That will help me to sell it more than a long windy multi-page treatment of same!
