My script takes palce in a Fairy-tale medival times, first off.

In my script I want a cross-dressing male (crossdresses as a female- or was that obvious?) who randomly bursts out singing songs that are not generally medival/fairy tale type songs. (Barbie Girl, I'm a Believer, We are the Champions... You get teh idea) so, my question is, if I don't write teh songs, is it still a musical?

Yep. MOULIN ROUGE did the same thing, remember. And it's very much a musical.

Of course it is! There are so many new musicals coming out based on famous musicians songs. (Madness: our house, Abba: mamma mia, take that musical, etc etc)

And of course moulin rouge which is a classic!

I hope so - my script is kind of Mamma Mia meets politics, which means lots of politicians randomly bursting out into the likes of ABBA, Queen and various other musicals. The first song of the play is going to be called "(We've Got No) Money Money Money", and I'm basically going to rewrite the ABBA song "Money Money Money"

Your script sounds like a British Panto(mime)... very popular and hugely entertaining .. the stage actors break down the fourth wall and interact directly with the audience to keep the plot moving forward. the 'principle boy' is largely played by a female (as in Peter Pan which is traditional panto) 'principle girl' written for the most beautiful female, and there is always a 'Dame' a comedic musical role played by a man (Mother, Nurse, ect...)

Yes! it is very pantomimish :) love it. Pantos are normally set way back when as well, in medieval times

At first my friend and I wanted the script I'm doing to be a pantomime - we'd just finished doing one with our theatre group, with me playing the principal girl and him playing the girl's Dad (not the dame), and we became quite panto-obsessed (I'm British so obviously I love pantos :D). Then we thought "Nah, don't make it a panto, make it a musical!" so now he's leaving it down to me to write it and then he thinks he's going to sort out all the technical stuff...pfft.

haha i was very tempted to make mine a panto as well (pantos rule) but dont you think tht after being in a few they become quite repetitive?

They are meant to :)
I find it relieving, everyone knows what will come next and you can laugh at how predictable it becomes... Watching a panto through the eyes of a child changes how they see the world of theatre, it isn't complex, because sometimes you just need to sit back and let the make-believe world envelop for an hour or two.

And they are for children...lol (ever noticed that Mr. Dress-up and the Friendly Giant were the same show for twenty years)
