INT. DOCTORS OFFICE - AFTERNOON

Lia sits on the operating table.

DOCTOR

I'm going to give you an anesthetic and give you gas, alright? I just want you to relax.

lia

Yeah, okay. Whatever you need.

The DOCTOR checks the needle before injecting it into her stomach. She then turns on the gas and places it over her mouth.

DOCTOR

I want you to count backwards by ten.

Lia nods, closes her eyes and begins to count before she falls asleep.

The NURSE hands the doctor a scalpel and she brings it down to her stomach. The lines where she has to cut have already been marked and she tries to make the first incision, but the scalpel doesn't cut through.

DOCTOR

You made sure this is a sharp knife, did you not?

nurse

It's right out of the package.

DOCTOR

It's not working. Hand me another one.

She places the scalpel down as the nurse goes into the drawer and takes out a fresh scalpel.

She walks over and unwraps it, handing it over.

nurse

Here, doctor.

The doctor grabs it and tries to make the incision again. And again, it doesn't go through.

nurse

That has to work.

DOCTOR

It isn't. I don't understand it.

The doctor puts down the scalpel and walks out of the room. In a few moments, she comes back with a DOCTOR #2

doctor #2

It isn't going in at all?

DOCTOR

No. I don't understand it. Not even a scratch

Doctor #2 takes out a scalpel and tries to make the incision, but it doesn't work.

Both doctors look at each other confused.

doctor

Should I go and tell her friend?

DOCTOR #2

That there are complications? Yes. I don't see how we are going to get in.

The doctor leaves the room and enters the waiting room.

Taylor, recognizing the doctor, stands up quickly.

taylor

What's wrong? Is she okay?

DOCTOR

She's fine. There's been a problem with the procedure, though.

TAYLOR

What kind of problem?

DOCTOR

We can't operate on her.

TAYLOR

Why not? She's been through the medical exam and everything was fine.

DOCTOR

There's a problem we didn't anticipate.

TAYLOR

Like what?

DOCTOR

(Sighing)

We can't make any incisions. None of our scalpels can puncture the flesh.
