An Excerpt from The In Between

INT. BRODER’S APARTMENT - AFTERNOON
Detective Broder slips out of his clothes and steps into a hot shower. Erica stands behind him, admiring his toned physique. She gets a nice view as he steps into the shower.

ERICA (V.O.)
Being a ghost does have some perks.
(beat)
Hey, don’t look at me like that. I haven’t been laid in four years and my prospects weren’t exactly looking up for the future either.

She sighs and walks out of the room.

CUT TO:
INT. BRODER’S APARTMENT - LATER
Broder steps out of the shower and puts a towel around himself. He hears a scuffling sound and walks quickly into the living room.
On the floor, a box of Scrabble has been knocked over and tiles have spilled out all over the floor. Most of them are random, but just below the chaos three lines are spelled out:
OSCAR
ANNE
MABEL’S DINER
Broder stares at it for a long moment. Erica stands in the corner of the room, watching him.

BRODER
Hello? Someone here?

Still wearing only a towel, he grabs his gun from the table and begins looking around his small apartment.

ERICA
Right, because a burglar would stop to leave you Scrabble messages.

Broder checks the front door, it is locked. He grudgingly admits no one is there and puts the gun down. He walks over to the tiles and kicks them, scrambling their message. Then he sits on the couch and buries his head in his hands.

BRODER
What is happening to me?

Erica moves to stand in front of him, placing her hands on her hips.

ERICA
I know this is hard for you. But you have to try to believe. I can’t do this on my own.
(sigh)
Not that you can hear me anyway.

She runs her fingers through her hair, frustrated.

BRODER
Oh, what the hell.

He gets up suddenly and goes into the bedroom to put on some clothes.
