An Excerpt from City on Fire
INT. PALMER HOUSE HOTEL - ELEVATOR — DAY
Dad and Jimmy ride the elevator with a black elevator operator.
DAD
I thought you had a new case you were working on. Some big shot over at Union Carbide?
JIMMY
Had. Had is right. I'm standin' on the sidewalk wiping me shoes down before I go into the building and he passes me going out.
DAD
Where was he going?
INT. PALMER HOUSE HOTEL DINING ROOM — DAY
JIMMY
Hades, for all I know. Fella'd jumped out his office window on the 14th floor and just about brained me on his way outa this world.
DAD
Jesus, Jimmy.
The elevator operator turns his head sharply to stare at Jimmy.
JIMMY (TO OPERATOR)
That's the kinda world we're livin' in, Charlie. Fellas born and raised to run the world throwin' themselves at the sidewalk . . . with accuracy.
