(A mediaeval-style banqueting hall, with tables to one end, illuminated by candles. GRENAUD, GERONE, DARLION and MIDELLERO are gathered in deep discussion upstage. KAYAREN, CRISTIENNE and ANGELLINE are gossiping downstage. A band of musicians is playing a waltz, and SHELLIEL is dancing with a gentleman-of-court. There are other dancing couples).
