An Excerpt from Kicked Aside
EXT. WOODS - DAY Anne wakes up Cecilia. She blinks. ANNE Come on. We have to get up. CECILIA (rolls over) Five more minutes. ANNE No. Now. CECILIA (sits up) All right, all right. Man. ANNE Good. Anne digs around in her knapsack. ANNE (V.O.) Maybe this wouldn't be so bad. Cecilia wasn't the brightest knife in the drawer, but she seemed nice enough. We'd be home soon enough. Cecilia emerges from behind the bushes, wearing a beautiful silver gown. ANNE You're not going to wear that, are you? CECILIA Why? Don't you like it? ANNE You look wonderful. But it's not exactly the most practical thing to be wearing when you're riding a horse all day. CECILIA Maybe. ANNE Let's see your other clothes. Cecilia leads Anne to her knapsack. Anne opens it and pulls out a few extravagant gowns. She sighs. ANNE Cecilia, you can't ride in these gowns. CECILIA I know that. I was just expecting that a prince would have shown up by now. ANNE You're hopeless. CECILIA What? ANNE I suppose that we'll have to buy you some new clothes when we get into town. Honestly. ANNE (V.O.) I thought about leaving her there. But this is my job. I'm her sidekick. I'm supposed to be the one with common sense, the foil. ANNE Damn it. CECILIA Excuse me? ANNE Nothing. Anne starts to stuff the dresses into the sack. Cecilia yelps and runs over. CECILIA They're going to wrinkle! ANNE Sorry. CECILIA Honestly. Have you never folded a dress before? ANNE No. I have servants. (pauses) Wait, you're a princess. How do you know? CECILIA (sighs) I like to dress as a maid and help out, all right? It's like other princesses dress up at boys and joust, or something. I like to cook and clean and fold. ANNE Really? CECILIA Yes, really. Now, we'd better get going. ANNE Whatever you say, your highness. |
