INT. RESTAURANT KITCHEN
It is the back room of a small, urban restaurant. A number of workers wearing white or black uniforms are moving around in the kitchen. Servers move between the kitchen and the main floor of the restaurant. In the back right corner is the back door, which is open and leads to an alley. In the back left corner, a young woman, about nineteen or twenty years old, stands in front of a large, industrial sink, washing dishes. She is KIM. She looks bored and perhaps a little angry. IAN, a male worker who is about her age, walks up to her.

IAN
Kim, you can’t be hiding back here. We
need you more on the floor than back here.

Kim ignores him at first, but when he remains standing there, she looks up at him with a surly expression, but she does not say anything. Ian is a little intimidated by her expression, but he stands his ground. The two of them are isolated in this part of the room, while most of the kitchen staff are concentrated closer to the restaurant floor.

The head chef, ELLIOT, yells at them both from the front of the kitchen.

ELLIOT
Hey, Ian! Have you talked to her, yet?

IAN
Yeah, I talked to her.

ELLIOT
Well, what’d she say?

Ian looks at Kim.

IAN
What’d you say?

Kim turns back to look at the dishes she is washing. Ian sighs in frustration.

ELLIOT
Tell her the restaurant can’t function when
its employees aren’t all working together.

Ian rolls his eyes a bit, but obediently mimics his boss.

IAN (to Kim)
The restaurant can’t function when
the employees aren’t working together.

Kim looks straight into Ian’s eyes with a combination of disgust and pity. She drops the dish she is working on into the sink and walks away from Ian.

The back right corner of the kitchen leads to a narrow hallway. Past the exit and along one wall of the hallway is a row of lockers. Kim walks up to one of the lockers, opens it, and starts to take off her apron. Ian walks up to her and stands next to her locker.

IAN
What are you doing?

KIM
Going home.

Elliot walks to the back of the kitchen and looks at the two of them, but stands several feet away.

ELLIOT
Your shift’s not over yet.

Kim takes a coat out of the locker and starts to put it on.

KIM
I don’t care.

Kim closes the locker and steps out the back door, into the alley.

EXT. ALLEY
Kim steps out into the alley behind the restaurant. She pulls her coat on and shoves her hands into her pockets. She walks through the alley and onto a street. It is a dark, drab street with few people, cars or businesses, and most of the appear in the distance. There are only a few street lamps lighting the street. She crosses the street diagonally, walking right through the middle of it at one points. Above her, in the middle of the sky, is the planet, around which the moon that Kim lives on is revolving. It is a gas giant, and appears about four times larger in the sky than our own moon does to us.
