An Excerpt from POTC: Traitors to the World

[Tortuga. The tavern is full of life. A man sits at a table, enjoying a tankard of rum. Jack walks in. He sits at the man’s table]

LIBRARIAN
Jack Sparrow.

JACK
Good guess. But you omitted the ‘Captain’.

LIBRARIAN
I can hear that shifty walk from anywhere.

[The librarian looks up and grins at Jack]

LIBRARIAN
What have you come for?

JACK
I understand you keep a library of rare books on certain seafaring subjects.

LIBRARIAN
Yes?

JACK
And some certain valuable scrolls on your person.

[The librarian grins slyly and leans forward]

LIBRARIAN
How much will you pay me?

JACK
I can’t pay you, yet, but –

LIBRARIAN
I don’t do favours. ‘Yet’ from Jack Sparrow’s mouth is a length of time not worth waiting for.

JACK
What do you want?

LIBRARIAN
I want a ship.

JACK
I’ve got a boat.

LIBRARIAN
How about your compass then?

JACK
Not on your life.

LIBRARIAN
Another rum?

[Jacks smiles cunningly]

[An hour passes. A jug of rum is delivered. The librarian by now is completely intoxicated, as is Jack, but they continue to drink]

JACK.[drunk]
As I was saying… I need to commander a sail and ship away.

LIBRARIAN
What’s stopping you?

JACK
I need some instructions.

LIBRARIAN
I can tell you where you can go.

JACK
Written down instructions.

LIBRARIAN
Oh I see.

JACK
It looks like tied paper rolled in a bow. You have them, it, or some.

LIBRARIAN
I do?

[The librarian searches his pockets. He pulls out a stack of half-crushed rolled scrolls]

LIBRARIAN
By god! I do!

[One scroll with text printed on it catches Jack’s eye. He reaches for it. The librarian suddenly stabs a dagger between Jacks index and middle finger. Jack freezes]

LIBRARIAN
I don’t do nothing for free.

JACK
Nor do I.

[Jack sends a fist into the librarian’s face. The man spills his tankard onto a maid. The maid slaps him. Another nearby rabble shout in protest and chaos ensues. While the librarian is being accosted, Jack grabs the scroll and sneaks out, grabbing a bottle of rum from a vacated table. As he leaves the tavern, a bench is sent smashing through the windows. Passer-bys are hardly concerned. Jack stumbles along drunkenly, tripping over himself and finding pillars and walls for support]

JACK
Ladies and gentlemen, you will always remember this day as the day you… something… something…. Captain Jack Sparrow!

[Jack collapses into the mud]
