Favorite films/plays MOVIES: Here's my best attempt at a representative smattering, and why: Contact (great characters, realistically fleshed out sci-fi premise, mature look at the faith vs. reason debate), American Beauty (damned elegant structure, and the bag monologue), Aliens (kick-ass character-driven action), Shawshank Redemption (for being engrossing, plus I love that the main character succeeds by persevering, which seems rare), Independence Day (f*** it all, here's Will Smith in a jet fighter battling a UFO), When Harry Met Sally (for the dialogue), Clerks (for the dialogue), MST3K ("No, sir, that's paper"), Truman Show (sucker for a Genesis metaphor ... nerd), Last Night (for choosing meaning over cheap drama), Fight Club (so fresh and so clean clean), 300 (for kickass action and for not apologizing for its uncompromising philosophy), Emperor's New Groove ('sfunny), and Cloverfield (for integrity of vision - doesn't it kinda defeat of purpose of cinema verite to abandon it when it becomes inconvenient, Neill? Yes, the audience forgave you, but I'm on to you and your tricks). BOOKS: Dune, Hyperion, Foundation, Ender, Alien Earth, Atlas Shrugged, The Next 100 Years, Free: The Future of a Radical Price, Guns Germs & Steel, Out of the Flames, How the Mind Works, The Moral Animal.
Other interests Activities: Graphic design, running, new plays, learning web design, poker, and reading about: neurology, evolutionary psychology, robotics, linguistics, history, psychohistory (check out "The Next 100 Years" by George Friedman), story structure, probability ... things that make me REAL popular at parties.
