An Excerpt from Boarding House Rules (Working Title)

INT. MALE DORM - LOBBY - DAY.

Charlie and Sam enter the crowded lobby. Doors are open, suit cases and luggage everywhere as well as students and some parents.

SAM
Good to see ya, roomie.

CHARLIE
Do you have to call me that, Sam?

SAM
What? It’s a term of endearment. So how was your Christmas?

CHARLIE
Good. Yeah really good. We had everyone around and I cooked it all.

SAM
You what?

CHARLIE
I cooked. You know, Pork; Turkey; Chicken-

SAM
Where was your mum during all of this?

CHARLIE
Sitting out with her sisters drinking champers.

SAM
You cooked.

CHARLIE
Yeah.

Beat. Sam watches Charlie in fascination for a moment.

CHARLIE (CONT'D)
What? It was fun.

SAM
And did you offer to do this?

CHARLIE
Yeah.

SAM
Huh.

CHARLIE
What?

SAM
Nothing. Wow, that’s cool. I just could never see myself offering
to go through making my family’s Christmas dinner, that’s all.

CHARLIE
I’m a good cook.

SAM
Oh, I know you are. You’re the best. Just at my house it would be all: “Ooh, the Beef’s tough” and “Sammy, my Prawns are looking at me”. I wouldn’t want to be in charge of that.

CHARLIE
Isn’t that usually you doing the complaining?

SAM
Hey, I can’t handle food that looks at me, okay? It’s creepy.

CHARLIE
So how was your Christmas then?

SAM
The Beef was tough and my Prawns were looking at me.
