An Excerpt from

PYOTR, 17, approaches, holding a veil in his hand. He is also wearing PEASANT CLOTHES. He is tall and has the gangly body of a teen who grew more quickly than his body could flesh itself out, yet he moves with unmistakable grace.

As he comes closer, we see that he has an androgynous beauty that, though different, is almost as compelling as his sister's.

He holds out the veil.

PYOTR

You should probably put this on. It's supposed to begin sometime today.

LISS

The sheen.

(beat)

He really did a number on us, didn't he?

(Pyotr nod-shrugs, looking uncertain. He holds out the veil.)

LISS

Thanks.

(secures the veil across the bridge of her nose so it covers the lower half of her face)

I really hate this.

PYOTR

(soothingly)

It'll be over in three days.

(glancing back the way they came)

We should get back. If Istvan wakes and finds we're gone, he might start worrying.

LISS

(her thoughts elsewhere)

I sometimes wonder...

(Now veiled, she turns to stare off into the distance, frowning.)

PYOTR

What?

LISS

If we're the only ones. I mean, surely he must have done other experiments--we couldn't have been the first.

PYOTR

The Master, you mean?

(beat)

You think?

LISS

It was too successful. I mean, look at us. He may have made us into monsters, but we're beautiful monsters. He succeeded in that, at least. There must have been some trial and error, at some point.

PYOTR

We never saw anyone else there. Or at least, I never did.

LISS

Maybe he kept them somewhere else. I remember he talked about his other estates, back when he first took us in. Or maybe they came before us. Maybe they escaped.

PYOTR

(wistful)

Other people like us.

LISS

(contemptuous)

Other monsters.
